Riding along with a new driver might evoke silent prayers, but Bud Anderson keeps Christianity openly intertwined with his driving school, Bud's Drivers' EDge.
Anderson is a jack-of-all-trades - father of two, career tech teacher, at the Charleston Job Corps, property manager, Kanawha County substitute teacher, character for singing telegrams.
The Christian component keeps peace in a vehicle with feuding spouses or parents and children.
"It's like I'm a social worker at the same time," Anderson said. "You have to be. I've interceded in many arguments and saved many teen and parent relationships. I encourage parents to ride in the back seat."
He said his inspiration to open a driving school came from the hours he spent already doing it.
"I had to finally stop giving away my time," Anderson said. "I helped kids get their licenses for 12 years ... as Boy Scout master back in the '80s ... the Buddy Volunteer program, recreation director for the Boys & Girls Club.... Every place I was, I was already helping kids get their licenses."
