Prithipal Singh, the chairman and managing director at Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd. (BSNL), the Indian state-owned fixed line operator, has stated that 1,000 Indian cities and towns would have mobile phone services by the end of the year. He added that 6.4 million telephone connections would be provided by the end of 2002, according to The Times of India. Prithipal Singh stated that there is a waiting list of 1.8 million telephone connections in India. BSNL aims to clear this list by the end of the year.
