China's Bosai Minerals Group has been unable to make bauxite shipments from its plant in Linden, Guyana, since the end of July owing to disruption caused by local unrest.
Steven Ma, manager of overseas business for Bosai Mineral Group Co. and former general manager of Bosai's Guyana operation (2007-2010) said that the reason Bosai Guyana had ceased production was due to the blockade of the Wismar-Mackenzie access bridge and local roads, meaning that no bauxite could be transported to the plant.
When asked about the long-term impact of the current unrest in Linden, Ma said that he did not foresee any significant problems.
"This protest and its influence on Bosai's bauxite operation in Linden is very short term," Ma said. "We do not foresee that it will have a big impact on the supply situation for refractory grade bauxite."
Guyana's president Donald Ramotar said that all the company's operations have been affected by the local protests and blockades.
