Last week, the world got an off-the-court look at frulein forehand--so named because the German-born Graf has been the top seed in women's tennis for nearly a decade--in Sports Illustrated's "swimsuit" spectacular, but it was not a new one. Back in April 1990, when Graf had "only" one U.S. Open and two Wimbledon trophies in her collection (both have multiplied considerably since), she modeled swimwear and evening wear in Vogue. (And, Tennis editor-in-chief Donna Doherty tells min, Martina Navratilova modeled for Vogue in April 1985.) In the scheme of things, SI's "Steffi-hype" is just a foot fault and takes nothing away from Walter Iooss, Jr.'s photography--and maybe it will give Family Circle editor-in-chief Susan Ungaro some ideas when her magazine's tennis tournament takes place in Hilton Head, S.C., during the first week in April. * SI's layout will not give Doherty any new ideas, because Tennis has often showed players out of uniform--including a cover shot a few years ago of Chris Evert in a full-length gown...holding a racquet. As for Graf, Doherty says, "Steffi's physique is no surprise within the tennis community; she's one of the few that male players--and reporters-- notice." Still, Doherty compliments SI for "publicizing the sport in a positive way with a super body rather than a supermodel's body."
