From humble beginnings in Co-Founder Don Shepherd's basement, AR RF/Microwave Instrumentation has become a leading provider of amplifiers, antennas, directional couplers, field-monitoring equipment, and much, much more.
AMPLIFIER RESEARCH, now known as AR RF/Microwave Instrumentation, began in 1969 with two men in a basement. Donald Shepherd and his partner, Dan Roth, had been working as design engineers producing RF designs for military applications. They saw a market for their skills in designing amplifiers for test applications. Inspired, they decided to try to make it on their own, working out of a makeshift laboratory in Don's basement.
AR has grown dramatically from that two-person company into a corporation that employs more than 200 people. The company continues to lead the industry with innovation, superior quality, technologically advanced products, and a global support system.
AR's first amplifier sale was a 2-W, 250-MHz RF amplifier costing $660. Many milestones quickly followed:
1973-The company moved to its current headquarters location in Souderton, PA (Fig. 1).
1976-AR introduced the first 10,000-W tube amplifier (10 to 100 MHz).
1988-AR designed the first 100-W solid-state amplifier (100 to 1000 MHz).
1992-The firm achieved a fivefold increase in power with its 500-W solid-state amplifier (100 to 1000 MHz).
