Capitalism is on the road to success in Central and Eastern Europe thanks to a little help from their U.S. marketing friends.
The AMA held a celebration dinner and awards ceremony Oct. 7 in Chicago to acknowledge the success of the Central and Eastern Europe Business Library Project.
Since 1991, the drive has netted over 80,000 business books worth more than $3 million. These up-to-date books are now located in business libraries in 12 countries, where there was a shortage of material explaining free-market business theories and practices.
The books were donated, cataloged, and shipped by AMA volunteers and business friends. This project is the largest business book drive ever undertaken by a business association.
Currently, there are 16 libraries with six in the final phase and two pending.
Four cities have two AMA-sponsored libraries. Those cities and their coordinating chapters are Moscow, Russia (Atlanta, with support from Richmond, Syracuse, and New Mexico); St. Petersburg, Russia (Lincoln and San Francisco); Bratislava, Slovakia (Knoxville and Nashville along with Wichita); and Bucharest, Romania (Oregon).
Single libraries are located in Warsaw, Poland (Chicago); Prague, Czech Republic (Knoxville, with support from all the chapters); Banska Bystrica, Slovakia (Knoxville and Nashville); Budapest, Hungary (all the chapters with support by Knoxville and Tampa); Sofia, Bulgaria (Delaware and Miami); Craiova, Romania (Oregon); Kiev, Ukraine Jew York City along with Lehigh Valley, Rochester, Albany, and others); and Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan (Lincoln).
The AMA's Austin Chapter, in cooperation with all the Texas chapters, is working to open a second library in Sofia in the spring.
The other sites, and the sponsoring chapters, to be completed in the final phase this spring are Krakow, Poland (Iowa); Riga, Latvia (Western Michigan); Irkutsk, Russia (Southwest Oregon); Tallinn, Estonia (Cincinnati); and Kaunas, Lithuania (Southern California).
