Alliance Data Systems, the Dallas-based company that provides transaction processing and information services for businesses, has announced it will lay off 850 workers at its 1,200-employee Voorhees facility. The layoffs are a result, says the firm, of losing one of its large customers, United States Satellite Broadcasting (USSB). In May, the Minneapolis-based television broadcast operator was acquired by DirecTV a unit of the El Segundo, California-based Hughes Electronics.
Alliance Data Systems handles the customer care call center for USSB from its Voorhees unit, providing subscription, billing and other customer support services. After the acquisition, DirecTV decided to take USSB's customer-service business to its own vendor.
