With 50 years in the retail fabric business under their belts, the second- and third-generation family members running National City-based Yardage Town have seen many changes in their industry.
Whether the fourth and fifth generations will face the same issues remains to be seen.
For instance, polar fleece is popular now, so Yardage Town has several colors in stock.
"It used to be polyester double knit and now, nobody will even touch it," said Lucy Goldman.
Her father, Rubin Recht, opened Yardage Town's first store in 1954 at 149 E. Main St. in El Cajon. The company still has a store in El Cajon, but it has moved three times.
Lucy Goldman owns the business now with her brother, Michael Recht, and her son, Dean Goldman.
She hasn't decided how long she'll keep working at Yardage Town, but Lucy Goldman said it depends on the third and fourth generations of the family.
Dean Goldman said the business is not computer-oriented like younger members of the family might be used to.
"We're on the (sales) floor, helping customers, traveling to see fabric. It's one of those hands-on businesses. Hopefully, it will pass on, but we'll see," he said.
