The National Association of Manufacturers (NAM) predicts a 3.5 percent
non-inflationary increase for its industry in 2000, and the Birmingharn area is
well-positioned to contribute to that expansion. At a December press conference, NAM President Jerry Jasinowski sang the praises of the ongoing economic growth, attributing it to strong consumer demand, an increasingly skilled workforce and the impact of e-commerce.
"We're looking at nothing less than an economic expansion of historic proportions," Jasinowski says.
"By the end of the first quarter of 2000, we will have had a longer and better balanced expansion than the 1960s. In fact, since 1983, U.S. economic growth rates have averaged over 3 percent annually, even
