Around 100 BP Amoco refining technologists will lose their jobs following the company's decision to reduce the cost of supplying refineries with the technology services they need to remain competitive.
Within a matter of weeks, BP Amoco and UOP will sign an agreement effectively outsourcing the job of the refining technology group to the latter.
In total 230 BP Amoco staff are affected with some of the younger ones likely to take the chance to join UOP's US Naperville site. In Europe, BP Amoco Sunbury, traditionally the key centre for research and development, will be most affected by the changes. Between 80 and 120 people are expected to be offered jobs either at UOP in Des Plaines, Illinois, or at the Guildford office in the UK. Only 25 will remain in staff positions at BP Amoco managing the project and "developing novel technologies".
