The anthology War of Extermination was originally published in German in 1995 as a companion volume to an itinerant exhibition on Wehrmacht war crimes bankrolled by millionaire Jan-Phillip Reemtsma which, after causing quite a stir, was discontinued in 2000. Even though some of the contributions of a more general nature go to ridiculous lengths to make a case for the supposed suppression of this topic in present-day German society (Omer Bartov's patronising piece on German historiography being a case in point), most of the authors have focused on specific incidents or campaigns.
