The intercollegiate FRCS (ORL) examination strikes fear into the hearts of ENT registrars, and preparation for the viva component is an uncertain process. Most rely on a combination of practice vivas and exam preparation courses. Knowing the right level of knowledge to aim at is particularly difficult.
The editorial team behind 'Viva Training in ENT ' have aimed to fulfil the desperate need that existed for literature to guide candidates in their preparation, as they did with the popular 'MCQs for ENT: Specialist Revision Guide for the FRCS '.
At first glance, the book is appealing. It is an approachable size; the layout is clear and is well punctuated with images and diagrams. All images are in black and white, and for the most part are acceptable, although 5 out of the 75 photographs and scans were insufficiently clear.
The editors state their intent to give candidates 'some idea of the breadth and depth of knowledge needed '; it is a book of sample questions, with no attempt to be comprehensive. They rightly...
