GARZADepartment of Hispanic Studies, University of Northern Colorado, 0295 Candelaria Hall, Greeley, CO, 80639, USAE-mail: [email protected] rich expressive language of the archpriest of Hita in his writings has motivated the elucidation of the origin and meaning of the names of his characters. The Libro de buen amor, transcending all the Spanish literature of its epoch, broadens the restricted linguistic limits and opens up the possibilities of a literary analysis. Regarding the episode of Don Melon and Dona Endrina, there are a number of interpretations that try to explain the meaning of the name given by Juan Ruiz to the leading male character.
