This wonderful volume is subtitled "An Analysis of Early Cunard and White Star Superliners." In fact it is the result of a very comprehensive study and investigation by the authors into the loss of the White Star Liner Titanic in 1912. The authors come very highly qualified for this work. The book contains 540 pages, with 30 chapters subdivided into Parts I - V, plus six appendices. At the foot of each chapter many references are given, which supplement the text handsomely.
The text revolves around the White Star Line sister ships Titanic, Olympic, and Britannic, and the Cunard Line sister ships, Lusitania and Mauretania. The history of design and building of these ships and propulsive machinery is discussed in great detail. Chapter 6, for example, is headed "The Watertube Boiler" and discusses the transition from...
