INTRODUCTION:
Thinking is assumed to emerge from other simpler cognitive process. It is the process of establishing association among the attributes of different entities or same entity, forming concepts assimilating and applying these equations and mainly the function of brain. It is a mental activity. It may be taken as the deliberate exploration of experience for a purpose. The purpose may be understanding, decision-making, planning, problem solving, judgement, action etc. involving the employment of any kind of cerebral activities (Nickerson, 1988).
Thinking is a mental activity. It may be taken as the deliberate exploration of experience for a purpose. This article compares the difference between the lateral and vertical thinking. Edward de Bono who invented the term "Lateral Thinking" in 1967 is the pioneer of lateral thinking. Lateral thinking is non-linear, non-sequential thinking that explores options without judgements and often leads to new ideas. Vertical thinking is specifically concerned with the facts. It depends on logical analysis. Vertical thinking is a process in which logic is in control of mind. It is a straight forward thinking. Thinking is a skill that can be improved by practice and direct attention. The skill with which innate intelligence is used is the skill of thinking. Vertical (logical) thinking as well as lateral thinking is a general attitude of mind and complementary to each other.
Lateral and vertical thinking : Human brain is the centre of thinking process. It has two parts, namely right hemisphere and left hemisphere. According to Wonder & Donovan (1984), we have two distinct thinking processes: Lateral and Vertical. Left hemisphere is concerned with vertical thinking which comprises analytical and verbal thinking process.
