DAVID M. STEC, The Targum of Psalms. Translated with critical introduction, apparatus and notes (Aramaic Bible 16; Collegeville, MN: Liturgical Press, 2004). Pp. xvi + 254. $89.95.
The publication of the English translation of the Targum of Psalms in the Aramaic Bible is most welcome and marks another step forward in scholarship related to this longneglected part of the targumic tradition. Stec has produced a translation with an extensive critical apparatus relating to manuscript variations as well as separate notes relating the Aramaic text to the MT. In keeping with the other volumes in this series, additions to or departures from the MT are printed in italics. The translation is preceded by a short introduction to the Targum of Psalms, which includes discussions of the following topics: date and character of the Targum of Psalms, midrashic and haggadic additions, the relationship between the Targum of Psalms and the Targum of Job, translation technique, the relationship of the Targum of Psalms to the MT and other versions, the language of the Targum of Psalms, and finally the manuscripts and editions of the Targum of Psalms, including a discussion on the manuscripts used in this edition.
