***SULLIVAN AND JOHNSON FORM INSTITUTE FOR HEALING IN SOCIETY AND MEDICINE Martin J. Sullivan, MD, and Diane Johnson, PhD, have formed the new, nonprofit Institute for Healing in Society and Medicine (IHSM) in Chapel Hill, NC. The IHSM opened in July 2002 to "reconnect physicians with ... their own inner lives, with their ... professional mission, and with the sacred roots of medicine," according to a concept paper published on the IHSM Web site (http://www.ihsmed.org).
Says Sullivan, "Who you are, what you do to your interior landscape affects how you treat your patients. But this is never discussed in medical school or practice." Instead, Sullivan says, the emphasis is on "how much information is delivered by educators, processed by students, and applied to a treatment algorithm.... You must have facts and figures to give the best care. But there is an important 'and' that is missing," namely, that healthcare providers need to be aware of themselves.
