File Magic Plus Professional is a comprehensive document management program that imports, saves, retrieves, and searches for PC-generated documents as well as scanned, faxed, or imported images. The program consists of five 3-1/2" disks and takes about 20 to 30 minutes to load using File Manager. Once the program is loaded, you must perform some extensive configurations, including file security, before the program may be used for the first time.
I evaluated this program on a Magitronic 486/66 PC with VGA display, having 8 Mb of RAM and a 415 Mb hard drive. Your experience will differ if your system specs are different from these.
I experienced some difficulty installing the program and had to confirm some suspicions with a technical representative. The toll-free support line is an indication that Westbrook intends to be the leader in document management software. The support person answered the phone immediately, was very courteous, and assured me that he knew of only a few instances where the installation procedure misfired as mine did. Evidently, the install routine did not create the required subdirectories for the integral database, archive, and in-basket; without these subdirectories, the program will not run. The solution was simply to create the subdirectories in DOS or Windows before running the install procedure.
The documentation (a single spiral-bound manual) is very complete. It has numerous illustrations, uses a step-by-step approach, and includes a very comprehensive tutorial. Once you have properly configured the program and used the tutorial, launching the program is actually simple.
