Social psychology, or the study of how individuals think, feel and behave in social contexts, has roots in the disciplines of both psychology and sociology. For psychologists, the influence of the real or perceived social environment and the effect these factors have on individual cognitive or affective behavior are of importance. For sociologists, symbolic interaction, causal relationships, personality and social structures are areas of study. Although early examples of what is now known as social psychology can be identified in the late nineteenth century, it was after Second World War that the field grew to prominence.
