Abstract
The birth, in South Korea, of a modern shipbuilding industry began during the 1960s. From this period, the shipbuilding industry benefited from the efficient economic policy of the new South Korean president, Park Chung-Hee. The, after 1973, from the emergence of the chaebols. During the last quarter of the 20th century a strong shipbuilding industry emerged. thanks to the low cost of Korean manpower, a growing know-how, and an active dumping policy, the Korean shipbuilding industry acceded during the 1990s to the second rank in the world behind Japan.
