Italo Svevo (1861 -1928) wrote two fictions that Ms. Zatta links to Steme, first, a novel James Joyce praised highly, La Coscienza di Zeno ( The Confessions of Zeno, 1923); and, second, the posthumously pub- lished Corto Viaggio Sentimentale (Short Sentimental Journey, 1949).
Reading Tristram Shandy primarily through Traugott, Ms. Zatta argues that Sterne's attack on Locke's "rationalistic reductiveness" is the same as Svevo's attack on Freud's reductive thinking: "Freudian psychoanalysis is...
