Projective techniques have been used in clinical population for the assessment of perception and psychopathology. The Rorschach test is one of the earliest personality test and has been in vogue for last many decades especially for psychodiagnostic purpose. It has been used with varied population such as epilepsy, mental retardation, children and adolescents and different mental disorder. The present study has been carried out with the aim to compare the profiles of schizophrenia and depression on Rorschach test. The study sample comprised of 30 schizophrenic and 30 depressive patients, in age range of 20-55 year of either sex. The tools Brief Psychiatric Rating scale, Beck Depression Inventory and Rorschach test were used. Findings of the study reveal that both the groups (schizophrenia and depression) differ significantly on reaction time, major details, minor details, poor form level, movement response, shading response, vista response, human response, and popular response.
Key Word : Rorschach, Schizophrenia, Depression.
Rorschach test has traditionally been considered to be a projective test. It maximizes the person's freedom to respond in unique ways. The overall goal of the technique is to assess the structure of personality with particular emphasizing on how individuals construct their experience (cognitive structuring) and the meanings assigned to their perceptual experiences (thematic imagery; Weiner, 2003).
Rorschach inkblot test findings on schizophrenic patients showed less number of movement responses, high C and CF responses. C responses were more than movement responses. Low F+ percentage, low popular responses were the main features of schizophrenia (Dubey, 1982, Kumar, 1961b).
In another study it has been observed that depressive patients showed decreased responses (R) with increased reaction time, more W and Low D responses. Form and shading responses were high; average movement responses with low color responses and sum C, F+ % were less than normal, popular responses were more in depressive patients. Content deals with animal's anatomy, human details, animal's details and Plant. The present study was conducted to see the significant differences and current status of profile of patients with schizophrenia and depression (Bohm, 1996).
The diagnosis of schizophrenia and depression seems to be overlapping due to similar symptoms like social withdrawal, reduced self esteem, decreased psycho-motor activity, feeling of self harm etc. Thus, the Rorschach test is found...
