In his in-depth examination of the work of Charles Mee and Anne Bogart, Scott Cummings sets out to investigate how playwright, director, designer and actor each prepare material so that it may anticipate and/or elicit the contributions of collaborators. As standard-bearers of recent theatrical collaboration, Mee and Bogart are subjects well suited to this purpose. The study includes a general introduction to their lives and careers, an outline of the history of the SITI Company and its training methods, an extensive analysis of an independent production of each artist and a case study of their collaboration on bobrauschenbergamerica, a collage piece that takes the viewer through a journey across the American landscape as Robert Rauschenberg might have conceived it.
