The Qianling Mausoleum is located on Mount Liang, six kilometers west to the town of Qianling County, Shaanxi Province and near the city of Xi'an, formerly the Tang capital. This spectacular tomb complex is the best preserved and has never been looted among all the 18 tombs housing the remains of emperors of theTang Dynasty.The Qianling Mausoleum is now protected as a key site under the state-level conservation.
Mount Liang, 76 kilometers west to Xi'an, is a limestone structure. In ancient times, it was a strategically important place where Qin Dynasty general Meng Tian defeated Hun invaders from the north and through which Silk Road pioneer Zhang Qian of the Han Dynasty embarked his epoch-making journey to Central Asia. The whole mountain consists of three peaks, among which the northern peak is the highest-1047.3 meters above sea level.The tumulus mounds on the southern peaks are called "Nipple Hills", due to their resemblance to the shape of nipples.
Emperor Li Zhi and Empress Wu Zetian
Emperor Gaozong of Tang, personal name Li Zhi, was the third emperor of the Tang Dynasty, ruling from 649 to 683. He was the ninth son of Emperor Taizong. At age 3, he was created the Prince of _lin. At age 16, he assumed the position as crown prince. In 683, he died in Luoyang, at age 56. After his death, his body was sent back to Changlan and buried in Mount Liang, which was later...
