One of the most dramatic and well-known events in the history of the greater Southwest occurred in August 1680, when the Pueblo Indians of New Mexico rebelled against Spanish rule and drove Hispanic settlers out of the upper Rio Grande valley. The Pueblos maintained their political independence for over a decade until traditional intervillage enmities resurfaced and put an end to the unified Pueblo front.
