Scientifically literate people are needed in every area of human endeavour, as our society becomes more science-and-technology based and we address increasingly more complex issues. Without a knowledge and understanding of science, it is hard to grasp the relevant issues and make well-founded decisions. The Science Foundation for Physics within the University of Sydney is making a small contribution to this part of society by hosting the International Science School. One of the other major aims of the ISS is to attract excellent students into careers in Science.
Some readers may remember watching Julius Sumner Miller on TV as kids, or getting up at 6:00 am on a Sunday morning to watch televised lectures of the annual Summer Science Schools.
