METHOD OF PREPARATION
1. Calculate the required quantity of each ingredient for the total amount to be prepared.
2. Accurately weigh and/or measure each ingredient.
3. Mix the pentoxifylline with the propylene glycol to form a smooth paste.
4. Geometrically, incorporate the hydrophilic ointment (or Dermabase, Vanicream) into the final weight and mix well.
5. Package and label.
PACKAGING
Package in tight, light-resistant containers.1
LABELING
Keep out of reach of children. Use only as directed. For external use only.
STABILITY
A beyond-use date of up to 30 days should be appropriate for this preparation.1
USE
Pentoxifylline topical wound cream has been used in the treatment of open wounds by applying it to the healthy tissue immediately surrounding the wound area.
QUALITY CONTROL
Quality-control assessment can include theoretical weight compared to actual weight, specific gravity, active drug assay, color, texture-surface, texture-spatula spread, appearance, feel, rheological properties and physical observations.2
