Greetings, Fellow Atwoodians!
Hope your new academic year has been pleasantly productive after a restful summer. This has been another good year for the Atwood community following the much-awaited publication of The Year of the Flood. We had a very productive MLA session on the new novel, followed by an issue of the Journal dedicated to the same. In March, (In)Habitation, a CD featuring Atwood's poems set to music, sung by soprano Eileen Strempel, was released by Centaur Music (more information available on the Society website). In June, a number of Society members had the pleasure of meeting our revered author at the Short Story Conference held in Toronto where they participated in two Atwood sessions. (Please read the report from Ted Sheckels on the Toronto events in the previous issue.) More locally and personally, I am helping to organize a community reading program on Alias Grace that involves more than 100 participants and culminates in a special event in early February, possibly featuring dance/music and quilt presentations.
As the fall semester gets into full swing, here are a few items to keep in mind.
The information for this year's Atwood Scholarship Contest is available on the Society website, at http:// themargaretatwoodsociety.wordpress.com/awards/. The submission deadline is December 1. Please note some of the judges are abroad, requesting hard copy submissions.
We will again sponsor two MLA sessions in Los Angeles in January 2011. One of them will focus on Atwood and the Environment, and the other will be a joint session with the Doris Lessing Society. The abstracts of the presentations, as well as the time and place of the sessions, can be found in this issue. The Convention runs from January 6th through 9th, and our business meeting is tentatively scheduled for the evening of the 8th. The meeting will be at the Wiltshire Grand Hotel; the time of the meeting will be announced at both Atwood sessions. I hope many of you can attend the sessions as well as the meeting.
As always, we encourage that Members organize/propose sessions on Atwood at various conferences. When you have related information, please send it to Cynthia Kuhn, at [email protected], so it could be posted on the Society website.
Best Wishes,
Tomoko Kuribayashi
