In the fall of 1997, the U.S. Corps of Engineers will start making a slight change to the Little Falls Dam. But they hope it will make a big difference to several species of fish.
The dam sits downstream on the Potomac River from the Mather Gorge, a critical water storage pool for Washington, D.C., and also the spawning site for American shad, striped bass and river herring. These anadromous fish live in the ocean but return to the freshwater gorge in their adult life.
