A 17-year-old girl with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) had been receiving treatment with stimulants since the age of 12 years. For her first 2 years of treatment, she received immediate-release methylphenidate [Ritalin]. She was then switched to long-acting methylphenidate [Concerta] 54mg tablet once daily. During her third year of treatment with Concerta, she developed a depressed mood and ingested an overdose of five Concerta tablets (270mg) with suicidal intent. On arriving at the emergency department (ED), her HR was 132 beats/min. At this point, more than 3 hours had passed since her overdose so charcoal was not administered. She was observed for 12 hours in the ED, and later discharged [outcome not stated].
