Dr. David P. Weikart, founder and president emeritus of High/Scope Educational Research Foundation in Ypsilanti, Michigan, died December 9, 2003, after a long struggle with leukemia.
From the early 1960s until his retirement in January 2000, Dave Weikart worked with dedication, drive, and perseverance to better the lives of children and families worldwide. He founded the High/Scope Educational Research Foundation in 1970 as an independent, nonprofit research and development organization and served as its president and chairman of the board. Well known for its educational model in treating children as active, intentional learners, High/Scope under Dave's leadership rose to the forefront of educational improvement efforts in this country and other countries around the world. His influence on the world's children and families has been extraordinary and is a lasting legacy.
Dave established two important studies of the long-term effects of early childhood education on children's lives-the High/Scope Perry Preschool Study in 1962 and the High/Scope Preschool Curriculum Comparison Study in 1967. Follow-ups of these two...
