Abstract

The Psalter of 1651 can be regarded as a work of religious syncretism, standing for a stage in the process of converting the Orthodox Romanians in Transylvania to Calvinism. It is intended both for individual reading through the illumination of believers by the Holy Spirit, as well as for the church service. Although it proposes a translation from the original document in Hebrew, it does not claim uniqueness within the existing Romanian versions but provides optional versions in the text, without an equivalent in Hebrew, by making use of a complicated system of brackets and marginal glosses. Hence, it manages to be a synthesis of the different versions, aiming to achieve a key objective of the Reform, the clarification of meaning.
