One of the most dismal aspects of the colonialization of Canada has been the process that has been termed cultural genocide--the planned destruction of the cultures, languages and religions of the aboriginal people. A key tool to this was the residential school system.
Residential schools were administered by religious bodies in partnership with the federal government for most of the period from 1879 to 1986. Only towards the last years of the programme did the government actually become the dominate partner....
