Tired of the mainstream comics they had grown up with and inspired by the do-it-yourself punk rock aesthetic of the 1970s, brothers Jaime and Gilbert Hernandez created Love and Rockets in 1981. That first self-published issue resembled a Xeroxed 'zine rather than the iconic comic that it would later become, but it featured each brother's most memorable characters: Jaime's Maggie and Hopey, and Gilbert's Luba. Fortunately, it found its way into the hands of Gary Groth, editor of The Comics Journal and cofounder of Fantagraphics Books, who offered to print the Hernandez brothers' work.
