Lloyds Metals & Engineers, part of the Lloyds Group has a narrow cold strip rolling plant at Dombivli. Under the expansion plan it has integrated forward with the commissioning of an ERW pipe plant at Murbad near Bombay, and integrated backward with the commissioning of the first phase of the sponge iron plant at Ghugus, Maharashtra. Lloyds Steel another group company will use the sponge iron for the production of HR coils and in turn will supply high quality HR strip to the ERW pipe plant, thus completing the forward and backward integration.
To further reduce the cost of raw materials, the group also plans to mine its own iron ore and coal, subject to necessary approvals. This would be in addition to the captive power plant being set up by Lloyds Metals using waste gases generated from its sponge iron plant. The synergistic effect of these expansions is expected to substantially reduce the cost of sponge iron production.
Completion of these expansion plans would make Lloyds Group an integrated iron and steel conglomerate with all activities from iron ore/coal mining to galvanised steel production performed in-house and within a distance...
