Abstract

The text of the play shows that Patricio achieved the conversion of the Irish people in three main ways: through the example of his life and the miracles he performed; with the aid of reason to explain the mysteries of the Christian faith; and by the miraculous creation of the purgatory of Lough Derg [...] The first aspect of Patricio's ministry is dealt with in the first half of the play, where we not only hear of his early life and thaumaturgical powers, but actually witness the performance of one of his miracles on stage; the second one is telescoped into the theological discussion which he holds with king Egerio [...] in the course of which the saint endeavours to prove the immortality of the soul and the existence of reward and punishment in the hereafter, and the third [...in of Ludovico's narrative...] supplies not only the irrefutable and definitive proof of the existence of hell and purgatory, but also, and more importantly, an explanation of how faith can lead to a full understanding of the mysteries of the Christian religion. The play may therefore be seen as a sort of extended homily, as a species of sermon comprising three well defined parts: an exemplum (the life of Patricio), an exposition of some fundamental tenets of the Christian faith, and a final, practical demonstration of the veracity of these religious truths as experienced in the cave of Lough Derg» (José María Ruano de la Haza, «Introduction», en Pedro Calderón de la Barca, El purgatorio de san Patricio, ed.
