Abstract

Interested in the religious imagination of young Quebecers, we hypothesized that after being "national religion" until the Quiet Revolution (1960-1970), and before becoming a "cultural religion" (1970-2000), Quebec Catholicism gradually entered a new phase. If it is too early, of course, to identify ways that it will take, the indicators - both local, global and "trans-religious" - allow us to see the emergence of a market for young Catholics. Thus, exculturation (Hervieux-Léger, 2003) observed in Quebec and elsewhere would have its downside. We would witness a simultaneous reconnection of Catholicism with the culture of consumerism. Indeed, these mutations are not disruption, but continuous processes, in cascades, which "original" trigger can be associated with the ongoing process of modernization of the late nineteenth century in Quebec. Thus, although the religious world of youth is our object, we register our exploration of the religious and religion in a broader perspective, and thus we realize that the religion and the youth are the product of an era, a social construction, always dependent on the adult world.
