Abstract

The perceived political need for unified leadership first led to a rhetoric of central political responsibilities in the hands of one communal hierarch in each for the four main living branches of Tibetan Buddhism - even though traditionally all rNying ma, bKa' brgyud and Sa skya sub-branches had held very diverse and decentralized structures of spiritual, political and economic power. [...] the dGe lugs representation of Tibetan Buddhism has dominated the academic discourse at American and European universities since the first decades of the exile until today.
