"Holistically" means understanding the content of reengineering and deploying it in conjunction with complementary disciplines. Five sets of activities constitute a holistic reengineering program:
* Identifying with a vision and strategy. The essence of reengineering is the creation of value streams, i.e., end-toend, interrelated process activities collectively generating value for the customer. An enterprise may be seen as a collection of value streams. A clear vision and competitive strategy provide these value streams with a meaningful integration. The first set of reengineering activities is to re-examine the vision and strategy from this integrated value-stream perspective and then to select or prioritize the value stream(s) to be reengineered.
