Kim Chiha (to use the Korean form of his name) may be the best-known Korean writer of this century, it) part because of the merit of his work, but also because of the poet's imprisonment in 1964, his receipt of a death sentence in 1974 for his amtidictator stance, and the commutation of that sentence and his subsequent release from prison in 1980 as the result of protests from outside Korea. In 1975, while still imprisoned, he won the Lotus Prize for his poetry, and in 1980 lie was a candidate for the Neustadt International Prize for Literature, sponsored by WLT.
