At the conclusion of Klaus Modick's 1991 novel Die Schrift vom Speicher (see WLT 66:2, p. 333) the main character discovers a long-lost chest in the attic of his boyhood home, the contents of which crystallize many of the events and images described earlier in the book. In his latest novel, set in the present, a diary and letters long hidden in a one-hundred-year-old piano similarly unlock the mystery of a love affair short-circuited by political circumstances in Nazi Germany.
