ABSTRACT:
Ayurveda is the one of the most noted system of medicine in the world. The term Ayurveda in Sanskrit consist of two words: Ayur meaning life and Veda meaning science, thus Ayurveda is the science of life. Avipathi Choornam is an ayurvedic medicine and contains rhizomes of Zingiber officinale; fruits of Piper Nigrum, Piper longum, Embelia ribes, Emblica officinalis, seeds of Elettaria cardamomum and leaves of Cinnamomum zeyalanicum and it are useful for the treatment of peptic ulcer. Peptic ulcer is a break in the lining of the stomach or duodenum. The gastroprotective activity of Avipathi Choornam was performed by the screening of antiulcer activity by ethanol induced gastric ulcer and screening of gastroprotective effect by Pylorus ligation method. The toxicity study shows the safety nature of Avipathi Choornam and the results obtained shows that it is a good and safe therapeutic agent for ulcer treatment.

INTRODUCTION:
A peptic ulcer is a break in the lining of the stomach or duodenum. The break can involve the mucosa, muscularis mucosa, sub mucosa and in some cases deeper layers of the muscle wall1. If the protective layer of mucus is insufficient or if there is inadequate dilution and buffering of acidic gastric juices by swallowed food and the alkaline juices of the small intestine, it can result in ulcer2. Peptic ulcers are caused by an imbalance between protective factors and damaging factors in the gastro intestinal mucosa3.

* Gastric ulcer - When a peptic ulcer is in stomach, it is called a gastric ulcer. The symptoms of gastric ulcers are more specific than peptic ulcer symptoms
* Duodenal ulcer - When a peptic ulcer is in duodenum, it is called a duodenal ulcer. This type of peptic ulcer develops in the first part of the small intestine. Some of the symptoms of a duodenal ulcer are interestingly quite opposite to those of gastric ulcers. Duodenal ulcers are the most common ulcers found in the Western world
