THIS volume presents the edited and richly annotated diary of Jacob E. Yoder, a Pennsylvania native and Freedmen's Bureau schoolteacher who remained in the South and became a respected educator of AfroAmericans in his adopted home. Yoder was one of many northern educators who migrated southward in the wake of the Civil War to assist in the education of the newly freed black population. He was better prepared than many in that he possessed some formal educational training.
