I must start by declaring a professional interest. As the teacher of a graduate course in applied econometrics for development I am regularly confronted by the challenge of trying to bridge the gap between the analytical crispness of textbook econometric theory and the altogether messier field of applied research using econometric methods. At one level this task has been enormously simplified by the rapid growth in powerful statistical and econometric computer packages, and by the ease with which data can be now accessed via the internet. However, it is the publication in the last year of two excellent books directed towards the practical aspects of applied economic research that has really helped to bring the oral tradition of applied research methods into the classroom. One of these books is Angus Deaton's superb Analysis of Household Surveys (Johns Hopkins, 1997) and the other is the one reviewed here.
