The European Federation of Therapeutic Communities (EFTC) was founded in 1981 with the signing of formal statutes by Lars Bremberg (Sweden), Eric Broekaert (Belgium), James Comberton (Ireland), Juan Corelli and Mario Picchi (Italy), Walfried Hauser (Austria), Martien Kooyman (the Netherlands), Martin Lutterjohan (Germany) and David Tomlinson (UK). Since that time, the Federation has grown in membership and strength and is now one of Europe’s largest and longest-lived recovery networks, with members from over 70 organisations in 27 European countries and associate members from Israel, Lebanon, Iran, Colombia, USA and Japan.
Members provide in-prison therapeutic communities; community-based therapeutic communities; structured day programmes; peer-led after-care services and street-based advice services.
