Dr. Thomas MacKenzie, a family physician from Kingston, Ont., who played a key role in health services research in Canada, died Oct. 19 following a brief illness. He was 49.
Tom, who received an MBA from Queen's University in 1972 and his MD in 1978, was director of the Case Mix Research Group at Queen's, where he was also an associate professor in the Department of Community Health and Epidemiology and codirector of the Clinical Evaluation Research Unit.
He devoted much of his career to collaborative outcomes and health services research in a number of clinical areas, including nephrology, orthopedics, neurology, gastroenterology and cardiology. He received numerous grants and contracts from agencies such as the National Health Research and Development Program and the US Federal Health Care Financing Administration.
His largest grants involved the evaluation of patient classification systems, development of computerized guidelines for elective surgical procedures and, more recently, participation in multicentre studies...
