Abstract

The contribution investigates the violence against women, intended as direct violence, both physical and sexual, in Eusebius' Ecclesiastical History and The Martyrs of Palestine. Among the few female figures that appear in both the Eusebian works, the martyresses are the best represented and among them, the ascetics, who testified to faith and chastity during the Diocletianic persecution: this praise of ascetic women seems to support an emerging model of life in the contemporary Christian communities. The violence against women is also considered within the general project of Eusebius' work: it deserves to demonstrate both how the Christian message can transform a woman into a man and how God can use his most humble servants for glorifying His power.
