Horváth's purpose for creating these Didaktisierungsvorschläge was to present recent German history without overtaxing her students' language abilities. The plans included were tried and tested three semesters at the University of Pittsburgh before publication.
Horváth has divided Die Lisa into eight parts based on eight important periods of Lisa's life. Each of these parts can be taught in two 50-minute sessions for a total of 16 hours of instruction (Part 1 of the semester plan ) . Plans are also included for an additional 20 hours of instruction that extend the students' comprehension of the material (Part 2 of the semester plan). Explicit grammar instruction is not included, but grammar review work is included in the lessons. The text and lessons are appropriate for students at the Intermediate low proficiency level (ACTFL guidelines).
