Many of the definitions in this dictionary originate from the glossary of terms in the 1st, 2nd and 3rd editions of Mind Your Own Travel Business, first published in 1975. It should certainly find a place on the reference shelves and can be particularly recommended as the author, Allan Beaver, is visiting professor at the International Centre for Tourist Research at Bournemouth University and the Leisure & Tourism Department of Buckinghamshire Chilterns University College. He is also a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Transport and other organizations connected with tourism and transport and thus well qualified to write on the travel industry.
The dictionary has been compiled in order to provide definitions of terminology and to "decode" acronyms and abbreviations for the world's largest industry. It is important to note that the dictionary is limited to tourism terminology used in the English-speaking world. The preface clearly sets out what is included and what is left out. For instance, there exist other dictionaries of travel, leisure, sport and tourism, so Professor Beaver's work does not try to cover leisure and sports terms. Therefore anyone wishing to find out about scuba diving or choice of golf-courses would have to look elsewhere....
