Nuclear chemist Darleane C. Hoffman has been named the recipient of Sigma Xi's 2003 William Procter Prize for Scientific Achievement.
She will deliver the annual Procter Prize Lecture at the Society's forum and annual meeting in November in Los Angeles (see related article on page 378).
A recipient of the 1997 National Medal of Science, Hoffman is an internationally recognized authority on the heaviest elements-those much heavier than uranium and plutonium that typically decay to lighter elements very quickly.
She holds joint appointments in the Nuclear Science Division of the U.S. Department of Energy's Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory and as professor of the graduate school...
